Doing some appropriate team building activities together as a team can be very helpful.
When a team first begins to meet, they may know very little about each other and what each member brings to the team. Trust and respect needs to develop between the team leader and the members of the team if purposes are to be accomplished.
Commitment, endurance and motivation are not a given; they need to be developed.
Successful teams focus on team building activities that help the process of bonding as a team. These activities can make the difference between just getting a job done and actually enjoying working together, thus creating endurance for the long haul.
When we ask teammates that have bonded well together, "what's really important to you"? These are some of the responses we have heard. “This team is making a positive difference in my life”. “I have grown in my confidence”. “I feel my skills and abilities are welcomed and respected”. “Working closely with my team has helped me recognize some behaviors I need to change in my marriage".
On the front end good team activities can break the ice, energize a reluctant or cautious team, help team members get to know each other, and send a team away, at the end of a team meeting, energized and motivated.
They help create an environment of trust and humor. Over the years I have done my own survey about teams and humor. I find the most successful teams believe humor is an essential element in tackling their team challenges because it reduces stress.
Along the way there are other team building activities which can help team members solve relational challenges and discover and appreciate each others gifts and abilities.
There are also team building activities that encourage creativity and create a positive atmosphere, and which facilitate problem solving or conflict resolution. The team is then set up to be able to achieve extraordinary outcomes.
